Visiting Cleveland

July 23 marked the year anniversary of my grandfather’s death.

It is amazing the changes that can happen in a year. It has been a very difficult year, yet also a very uplifting and exciting one at the same time. Just less than 6 months later (on February 3), his twin brother Marshall passed away. It was difficult to say goodbye to “Papa” Marshall, but there was also something strangely comforting about seeing Marshall and Alan next to each other again at the cemetery.

In the Jewish religion, you wait 30 days to a year after the burial to set the headstone. This is to give full time to grieve and face life without the loved one. It is to start to feel whole again. Then, at the stone setting, you can put that part of your grieving behind you and hopefully replace the loss with happier memories.

Last week, my Bedol family gathered together for the stone setting for both Alan and Marshall. It was fitting that they were both at the same time. There were some tears at the cemetery, but there were happy and truly magical times as we used this as a family reunion. It was even more special because we could also celebrate new life with my cousin’s 2-year-old son Jacob (the first of this next generation) and my twin pregnancy.

I forgot my big DSLR camera in Virginia, but that was okay. It gave me time to really appreciate being with my family. Plus, iPhones take great pictures when needed, and my aunt took some incredible pictures on her Canon that I am going to share as well (thanks, Aunt Sherry!).

We went to where my grandfather's factory, which was knocked down years ago. There are still bricks by the fence. Every time we go to Cleveland, we go back and take some more bricks for the whole family.

On our way out of town, we stopped at Twinsburg, Ohio. This is a sweet town that hosts the Twins Days Festival every first weekend in August. Every year since the beginning of the festival, Marshall and Alan would go to Twinsburg and make it their mission to find the prettiest, biggest-busted blondes in attendance. They took pictures with all of the twins, and they proudly showed these pictures in a collage to everyone during the next year.

Papa Alan died on July 23, 2012. Marshall died the following February 3, 2013. I found out I was pregnant just 2 months later. We were without twins in our family for 1 month! It is only appropriate that the Doyles carry on the family tradition of going to the Twins Days Festivals. Although we were in Ohio just a couple of weeks too early for the festival, we had to stop through the town for some photo ops.
