Prepping for Hurricane Sandy, the Frankenstorm

The nerd in me hears that we are going to be having some bad weather, and I immediately get excited (I do love a good thunderstorm). The teacher in me wonders if we are going to miss any school. The realist in me immediately starts to get worried if we will be without power or have damage to the house.

Here’s the nerd’s thinking: Hurricane Sandy is coming up and is parallel with the east coast right now. It will then turn about 90 degrees and make landfall Sunday at about 2 pm just north of us. It is currently a tropical storm, but it will gather more speed and be upgraded again to a hurricane by the time it hits land. We also have this huge cold front moving in from the west (yesterday, it looked like it stretched from Mexico to Canada… that’s huge!). When the hurricane and cold front hit… who knows what will happen! That’s where the excitement is gathering on the radio, TV, and internet.
The teacher, however, thinks: Oh my gosh, we are literally right in the middle of our weather unit. How timely! To make it even better, next week, we are supposed to discuss hurricanes, tornadoes, blizzards, and thunderstorms. I couldn’t have planned this better if I tried! But wait! Next week, we have to finish up a huge collaborative project with a different school, I am getting observed by other school personnel (to look for 21st century teaching), the students have a huge book project due, and we have Channel 99 coming in to film a lesson of mine on Friday. I don’t have time to be off of school. Wait, who am I kidding? I’m a teacher. I’ll make it work! Bring on the storm!
The realist: Oh my gosh, it’s going to be horrible and I have no idea what will happen! We had this horrible storm come through on June 25, and I don’t want to be left unprepared. We started to get our emergency kit together, but we need to finish it up now! Plus, we need to get supplies.

As a reminder, here is what we are putting in our kit:

  1. A flashlight and extra batteries
  2. Bottled water
  3. Treats and food for Lucy
  4. Treats and food for Toby
  5. A weather radio
  6. Snacks
  7. Charger
  8. Sweatshirts or Blanket
  9. Copies of Documents, Etc: drivers licenses, credit cards, insurance info, emergency phone numbers)
  10. Cash
  11. 5-7 days worth of prescriptions
  12. Backpack to carry everything

Also, we made sure to stock our supplies that we keep in our garage. Thank you, Costco!
